In 2019, Jeanette Garcia Blanco walked into what she thought was a routine immigration interview, with her husband and her lawyer beside her. Officers told her it would take “about two hours.” She was detained for four months.

Jeanette is an attorney from the Dominican Republic, a certified yoga teacher and fluent in English and Spanish. Within hours she went from a full, busy life to leg shackles, a uniform and a dorm she shared with about 100 women, with no clear answers about her future. She calls it purgatory: “You’re not dead. You’re not alive. And life still goes on without you.”

What happened next is the heart of this episode. Jeanette stopped asking “Why me?” and started asking “What am I doing here?” Then her experience changed. She started yoga classes in the yard that grew to 10 to 15 women. She became the facility’s unofficial interpreter, mediator and paralegal, helping detainees and their attorneys get their cases organized. She celebrated her 50th birthday with a “cake” built from stacked cinnamon buns, and she still calls it one of the most memorable birthdays of her life.

Then comes the twist. Two years earlier, on the last day of her yoga teacher training, Jeanette made a vision board. On it: teach yoga in prisons, work as an interpreter and help immigrants. The universe delivered all three, just not the way she pictured. As Jeanette puts it, “The universe is a chef, ready to serve your dessert or your main course exactly as you ask.”

This is Jeanette’s first time telling her story on video. It’s honest and full of humanity: women praying side by side in different languages, a feud with a guard that ended in a truce, and a woman facing deportation who calmly asked Jeanette, “Don’t you know that everything is going to be resolved?”

  • How 100 strangers built a community and a sisterhood
  • Why “God has ears no matter which language you pray in”
  • How detainees made makeup and meals from almost nothing
  • The book Jeanette is writing to share the stories of the women she met

💬 Quotes:

“This feels like purgatory. You’re not dead. You’re not alive. And life still goes on without you.”“Be careful what you wish for… the universe is a chef.”“I discovered God has ears no matter which language or which path you are.”

🌟 Takeaway: Every one of us is placed where we are for a reason. If you don’t know yours yet, ask. Stop complaining, let go of the past, take the lesson with gratitude and move forward.
